On Thursday, March 1st I went to my family doctor due to what felt like a lingering cold. I tested positive for strep throat, which I have had many times since our youngest was born. The repeated instances of strep caused my doctor to order some blood work to discover the ultimate cause. The test revealed extremely low red and white blood cells as well as platelets. Friday morning at 6:50 my doctor called and wanted to admit me to the hospital, due to fear over the low white cells which fight infections. Since I had no fever we instead met with Dr. John Petrus, (who is outstanding by the way) who drew some blood to eliminate some potential diagnoses. On Monday the 5th we returned and I had a bone marrow sample taken and we were scheduled to return on Thursday for the results. Wednesday morning at 8:30 I received a call from Dr. Petrus’ office asking me to come in as soon as possible. I called Adam home from work and we went in to discover I had acute myeloid leukemia. We picked up Paige, our 7 year old from school and went home to explain to her and Hayleigh what was happening. Paige who has such a sensitive and caring spirit was tearful. I laid Mollie down for her nap and the three girls sat out in the sun and painted our nails. Then I checked into the hospital to begin a long and uncertain journey at 3:00 on Wednesday, March 7th.
